How to Annotate Any Website in Chrome (Step by Step)

Sometimes you need to point at something on a website you don't control. A client's live site. A competitor's pricing page. A deploy preview someone else built. Taking a screenshot, cropping it, drawing a red circle and pasting it into an email works, but it loses the URL, the browser and anything a developer would need to fix it.

A Chrome extension lets you annotate the page itself. This guide walks through doing that with the PinReview extension, from install to a task on your board.

What you'll need

  • Google Chrome (or another Chromium browser such as Edge or Brave)
  • A PinReview account. The Free plan includes a 7-day extension trial, and the extension is included on every paid plan.
  • A project in PinReview. Feedback from the extension lands on that project's board.

Step 1: Install the extension

Open the PinReview extension on the Chrome Web Store and click Add to Chrome. Pin it to your toolbar from the puzzle-piece menu so it's one click away.

Step 2: Sign in

Click the PinReview icon and sign in with your email and password, or with Google. You only do this once.

Step 3: Open the site and pick a project

Go to the website you want to annotate. Any URL works: production, staging, a password-protected preview or a third-party site.

Open the extension and choose the project this feedback belongs to. If you've reviewed this site before, PinReview recognises it. Then switch on Show feedback on this page.

Step 4: Click the element you want to comment on

Hover over the page and the element under your cursor is highlighted. Click the one you mean: a button, a heading, an image, a form field. The pin attaches to that element, not to a spot on the screen, so it stays meaningful as the layout changes.

Step 5: Write the comment and mark up the screenshot

Type what's wrong or what should change. Keep it to one issue per pin. Five specific pins are far easier to act on than one long note.

If a picture helps, annotate the screenshot before you submit. Draw a box around a misaligned block, add an arrow to the exact pixel, sketch freehand, or drop in text labels. Our guide to annotating a screenshot has tips on making markup clear.

Step 6: Submit, and it becomes a task

When you submit, PinReview creates a task on your project's board. It automatically captures:

  • A full-page screenshot, with your annotations
  • The exact CSS selector of the element you clicked
  • The page URL
  • Viewport size, browser and OS
  • Any console errors on the page

You didn't have to open DevTools or copy anything. The developer picking up the task has everything they need to reproduce it.

Step 7: Share it with your team or client

Every pin is already on a shared Kanban board, so your team can triage, assign and resolve it there. See triaging website bugs on a Kanban board for a simple workflow.

To bring others in, invite guests with a share link. Guests are unlimited and free on every plan. On sites where the PinReview snippet isn't installed, guests will need the extension too, and the link prompts them to add it.

Tips for annotating sites you don't control

Say which environment you're on. The URL is captured, but production and staging drift. Mention it when you share the board.

Check more than one screen size. Resize the window or use Chrome's device mode. The viewport is recorded with every pin, so developers know which layout you saw.

Label reference pins clearly. On competitor or inspiration sites, start the comment with "Reference:" so nobody tries to fix someone else's website.

Use the snippet where you can. For sites you control, the embeddable widget lets clients comment with nothing to install. Keep the extension for everything else.

The bottom line

Annotating a website in Chrome takes a one-time install and a click. You pick the element, write the comment, mark up the screenshot if it helps, and PinReview turns it into a task with the selector, URL and console errors attached.
